LUMSDEN NOTES
GALA COMMITTEE. (From Our Correspondent.) A meeting of the Gala Committee was held on Tuesday when Dr Brown presided over an attendance of 12 members. The treasurer submitted a rough balance-sheet of the gala day accounts which showed a credit of £l5. It is expected that when all the accounts have been settled the final balance will be in the vicinity of £l2. This amount was considered very satisfactory in view of the fact that very rough weather was experienced during the gala. The question of the disposal of the funds was discussed. It had been previously decided to donate 75 per cent, of the proceeds to a bowling green and 25 per cent to the hospital funds. Members were of the opinion that the amount was too small to be divided and the Rev. G. H. Lawrence gave notice to move at the next meeting: That the motion dealing with the distribution of the gala day proceeds be rescinded.” The matter will be discussed at the next meeting to be held when the balance-sheet will be presented. The secretary and treasurer were authorized to pay any accounts which may be received before the next meeting. Ex-Pupils’ Association. A meeting of the Lumsden School ExPupils’ Association was held on Wednesday. There was a large attendance and Mr Alexander McAlister presided. Reports were received from the various clans, the members of which had been energetic in obtaining the names of the ex-pupils. It was decided that the jubilee celebrations extend over three days viz., Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The date was fixed for the last week in May, 1929. The circular letter submitted by the sub-committee was adopted. It was resolved to form a ladies’ and a men’s committee to work up the jubilee and to report to a general meeting at intervals. The following ladies were elected to the executive: Mesdames G. F. Johnson, J. Menzies, A. McDonald, G. Small, Misses M. Belsham, W. Belsham, M. Menzies. The men’s committee will be comprised of the president, secretary, and a delegate each from the school committee, magazine committee, Ex-Pupils’ Association and school staff. Mr G. Stanford was appointed to represent the Ex-Pupils’ Association on the executive. Tennis. The tennis competition in the Northern District will commence on Saturday. The Lumsden A team will travel to Waikaia and the B team will play a match with the Waikaia B team on the local courts. The weather has been favourable for tennis during the week and large numbers have been patronizing the courts. Caledonian Society. At the meeting of the Caledonian Society held on Saturday it was decided to donate cash prizes for dancing events instead of medals as in previous years. It was also decided to call tenders for the right to sell refreshments on sports day. Lumsden School. The work of remodelling the Lumsden School has now been completed. An additional room has been erected and the school generally has been greatlv improved. Some of the pupils have been attending the temporary school in the public hall for some weeks and have now returned to the main school buildings.
