BLUFF NOTES

FOOTBALLERS SMOKE CONCERT. ENTHUSIASTIC GATHERING. (From Our Correspondent.) On Saturday evening in Radio Hall, Bluff, the football club held its annual smoke concert over 70 members and supporters attending. The president, Mr A. E. Budd, occupied the chair. The chairman briefly welcomed all those present and expressed the hope that they would find the evening enjoyable. The first toast proposed, after the Royal toast had been honoured, was that of the Southland Rugby Union. Mr W. B. Dixon eulogized the work that was being done by that body saying that the Bluff Club had always received most fair and impartial treatment. Their requests had been met readily and disputes settled to the satisfaction of all. Mr J. C. McKinnon replied assuring them that full consideration was given to all football matters and that the Bluff representative, Mr G. McChesney had their interests at heart. The next toast was that of the Bluff Football Club. In proposing the toast Mr C. W. *Tonkinson said the club had not come out on top the past season but every individual member had done his best and no more could be expected. The club was specially favoured in that it had such a number of capable coaches always ready to help the younger members. In his reply Mr A. Jones, the secretary, said the team had not had a real day’s training during the season through the failure of the men to turn up to practice. They now had a fine new pavilion and there would be no excuse on that score in the future. He thanked the coaches Messrs Budd, Forde and Finnerty for their attention and Mr J. R. Sinclair for his donation every playing Saturday. Mr T. Fowler replied on behalf of the junior team. Other toasts honoured were: “Kindred Sports” proposed by Mr W. P. Rae, response Messrs H. Tall (rowing), C. W. Tonkinson (swimming), C. Winter (cricket) W. B. Dixon (bowls), D. Harland (tennis) and P. McQuarrie (boxing), the “Winners of the second grade competition” (Waikiwi) proposed by Mr Budd and responded to by Mr D. Ross; the “Coaches” proposed by Mr A. McGregor and responded to by Messrs J. Forde and A. E. Budd; the “Ladies” proposed by Mr J. Forde and replied to by Mr T. Lee; the “President” proposed by Mr A. Denny. Items were given by Messrs M. Wixon, C. Te Au, J. Brown, A. Giles, A. Hart, T. Fowler, G. Applegarth, P. Thornton, J. Rossini, J. Webber and C. R.obinson.
