FLOODED RIVERS
WATERS RECEDING. POSITION IN SOUTHLAND. With the cessation of rain yesterday the flooded rivers in all parts of Southland commenced to recede and provided the warm weather experienced yesterday does not provoke too rapid melting of the snow in the high country all the rivers should return to normal level in a few days. . Last evening the Mataura river was reported to be about one foot above normal at Waikaia and falling fast, and at Gore was four feet five inches above the usual level and falling steadily. The position showed improvement in the Waikaka district, although the water was still high. At Gorge Road, the river rose steadily on Monday night to a height of about five feet, but commenced to recede yesterday and was expected to have fallen two feet by this morning. The Oreti river receded considerably on Monday night and yesterday the road in the vicinity of the iron bridge was clear with the river falling steadily. The Makarewa river was very high yesterday, and at the Wallacetown crossing threatened to break over the road, but fortunately commenced to fall towards evening. Throughout Southland yesterday large areas of level country were covered with surface water, but with warm weather, which the conditions yesterday promised, it should soon clear away.
