ASSAULT CASE
FARMER SENT TO GAOL. (Per United Press Association.) Dannevirke, October 16. An unusual assault case was heard before Justices to-day, being a private action- in which William Hermanee.n, farmer of Maharahara, was charged with having assaulted Thomas Hanson. The latter said that when he told defendant he was leaving his employ, accused threw Hanson’s gear out of the harness room. He also picked up a heavy gate hinge weighing several pounds and struck him across the right arm and then the left arm. Hanson put his hands to his face to protect himself. Had he not done so he would have been struck on the head. He had had to go to hospital for treatment.. Accused admitted that there had been a Ecuffle but said Hanson struck him first and had picked up a gate hinge. In getting the hinge away from him Hanson must have been hit. He could not account for the manner in which Hanson received his injuries. The bench took a serious view of the matter and convicted and sentenced Hermansen to 21 days imprisonment. They declined to consider the question of a fine, suspension of the warrant or granting a retrial. . , . .
