Northumberland, northern ports, Januarj 18. Waikawa, Wellington, February 18. GENERAL NOTES. The Oreti sailed from Invercargill yesterday'afternoon for Port Craig. The Waikawa from Pacific Coast ports of America, commenced discharge of her Bluff cargo of case oil and general merchandise yesterday. On completion she will sail for Melbourne and Sydney to discharge the remainder of her cargo. She will get away on the tide to-morrow afternoon. The Calm, which left Wellington at 4.15 p.m. on Saturday and the Opihi which left Westport at 10.20 a.m. on the same day, both for Bluff had not been sighted from the signal station, Bluff, up to 11 o’clock last evening. The Calm will berth this morning and will'sail to-night for the usual northern ports. The Opihi after discharging coal at Bluff, will sail for Westport, loading there for Bluff and Dunedin. She is due back here on the 26th. The Karetu which was expected to sail from Dunedin at 11 p.m. yesterday, is due at Bluff to-day. She will sail to-morrow evening for Sydney and Newcastle via Port Craig. About the end of next week the Karetu will load at Sydney for New Zealand ports. The vessel will proceed to Dunedin, Lyttelton, Oamaru and Bluff in the order named, and is expected to arrive here on November 30. Leaving Dunedin to-morrow the Turakina is due at Bluff on Thursday. The Canadian Conqueror, carrying general cargo from eastern Canadian ports for discharge at Wellington, Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin and Bluff, is due here about the 21st. She will then load in the south, proceeding to Auckland to complete, and will sail for New York, Boston and Montreal. Sailing from Southampton on Saturday for New Zealand ports, the Tainui is due at Bluff on October 21. Messrs J. G. Ward and Co., local agents for the A. and A. Line, advise the following additional sailings: Enton on November 10, Kabinga on November 26 and Willaston at the beginning of December for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Dunedin, carrying general cargo for transhipment. It is interesting to note that when the new Norddeutscher Lloyd liners Europa and Bremen, each cf 46,000 tons gross, were completed, Germany became the fourth largest ship owning nation in the world, coming in front of both France and Italy. The first three are Great Britain, United States and Japan. H.M.S. Dunedin, which has been undergoing extensive refitting and overhauling, was undocked at Auckland last Thursday. The warship is to leave Auckland to-day on a two-months’ cruise to southern ports. The Union Steam Ship Company intends to test the possibilities of the Norfolk Island trade (says the New Zealand Herald’s correspondent). The steamer Moeraki, trading between Sydney and Fiji, is to call at Norfolk Island on both the outward and homeward trips. Every effort is being made to supply cargo, as she will cut down by nearly two days the time now occupied on the voyage to Sydney. According to schedule H.M.S. Diomede, which is returning to New Zealand after refitting in England, was due at San Pedro yesterday, and will afterwards call at Honolulu and Suva. She is due at Auckland on November 19. H.M.S. Veronica, which has been cruising in the South Seas for four months, is reported to have cleared Suva on October 8 for Tonga and Auckland. She is scheduled to leave Tonga on Wednesday and to reach Auckland on October 23. The new Aorangi, for which the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand ie to place an order at an early date, will be somewhat larger than her predecessor (states the Syren and Shipping). She will be 630 feet in length b.p., 655 feet in overall length, 83 feet nine inches in breadth., and of 29,000 tone displacement fully loaded. Alternative tenders have been asked for (1) Doxford, (2) Sulzer, (3) Burmeister and Wain internal combustion engines, and (4) geared turbines. The Aorangi, which was built at Fairfield in 1924, has quadruple-screw Fairfield-Sulzer engines. TRANS PACIFIC SERVICES. The Union ‘shipping Company advises the following T v>vements of trans-Pacific cargo steamers: — Waitemata, was to leave Los Angeles October 12. Due Auckland about November 6, Napier November 12, Lyttelton 16th, Dunedin 19th, Nelson 24th and New Plymouth November 29. Proceeds thence to Suva and Vancouver. Waihemo, left Suva September 22 for Vancouver direct where due October 13. Nordhval, loads at Vancouver and San Francisco early tn November for Auckland, Melbourne and Sydney.

Wairuna, leaves Auckland October 16 for Apia, Fanning Island and Vancouver. Waiotapu, was to leave Melbourne October 12 for Sydney to complete discharge of her p acific Coast cargo. Waikawa, was to leave Nelson October 12 for Bluff, Melbourne, Sydney and Vancouver. Hauraki, left Auckland October 13 for Wellington, Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney and Vancouver. WITHIN WIRELESS RANGE.
