RUSSIAN TREASURES
WORKS OF ART TO BE SOLD. MUSEUMS OVERCROWDED. (Rec. 7.35 p.m.) London, October 10. The Berlin correspondent of The Times reports that the sale in Russia of works of art on behalf of the Soviet Trade Delegation begins on November 6. Some 447 valuable objects have been taken from Leningrad museums and castles. The catalogue explains that Russia’s public collections have been so enriched by the confiscation of private collections that it becomes possible to dispose of the surplus without appreciably depleting the museums and galleries. The surplus is so numerous that it is impossible to find accommodation even after utiliring the Tsar’s Winter Palace. The objects include priceless tapestries, gold ware, furniture, sculptures and paintings.—Times Cables.
