SUMMER PASTIMES
WAIHOPAI SPORTS’ ASSOCIATION. The annual meeting of the Waihopai Sports’ Association was held last night, when the president. Mr C. J. Broad, presided over a very satisfactory attendance of members. The annual report presented read, inter alia, as follows: “During the year only two committee meetings other than the halfyearly meeting have been held. Now that the different clubs connected with the association are well established, there has been very little outside of routine business to be transacted. The year commenced with a credit balance of £33 18/8 and closed with a credit balance of £69 4/2. This was occasioned chiefly by the Croquet Club’s repayment of balance of principle owing by them. The green of the Bowling Club received its usual top-dressing immediately after the close of last season, and as the result of a mild winter the growth has been greater than usual, and the green at the moment presents a good sward of grass to the eye. Indications are that during the coming season bowlers will have a much improved surface on which to play. The membership of the Tennis Club has slightly increased during the year, and the association hopes that it will further increase during the incoming season as with their heavy indebtedness it is only by keeping up the membership that it will be possible for the club to liquidate its liabilities within a limited time. The Croquet Club’s grounds are also looking very well and have bene-, fited by the mildness of the winter. A good sole of grass is now noticeable. From appearances a very good playing surface should be available this season, certainly much better than in the past.. The members of the club are entitled to great credit for the manner in which they have applied themselves to improve their lawns. During the year the club paid off the £25 owing to the association, and is now free of debt. The grounds generally last year presented a very pleasing appearance, and the thanks of the association are due in this respect to Mr Steans, whose work is entirely of his own volition, and to Messrs McDowell and A. E. Broad who also lent valuable assistance. From the commencement of the season a billiard table has been under the control of the social committee, which is to be congratulated on its management. At the same time the association deplores that the committee is not being supported by members to the extent anticipated. Thanks are also due to Messrs Tapper and Spiers for donating and erecting the arch over the entrance gates.” The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mr C. J. Broad; vicepresidents, Messrs T. D. Kingsland, Adam Hamilton and J. H. Tapper; committee, Mesdames J. Johnston, E. J. Watt, Messrs A. E. Broad, G. Stevens, R. Whyte, F. Kingsland; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. R. Officer; hon. auditor, Mr G. Stevens.
