CRICKET CLUB. (From Our Correspondent.) The annual meeting af the Mataura Cricket Club was held in the Coronation Hall on Friday night. In the absence of the president (Mr J. H. Clark), Mr T. P. Bogue presided over an attendance of 14 members. The secretary (Mr J. F. Heslin) read the annual report and balance-sheet (already published), and the documents were adopted on the motion of Messrs J. Maley and L. H. Bowers. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mr J. H. Clark (reelected) ; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Hart, B. Downes, A. ’Richmond and H. W. Oliver; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. F. Heslin (re-elected) ; club captain, Mr T. P. Bogue; vice-club captain, Mr J. Maley; Executive Committee, Messrs R. Richmond, H. Anderson, L. H. Bowers, A. Webb and A. A Turner; auditor, Mr R. McDonald (reelected) ; Grounds Committee, all playing members, with Mr J. Spooner as convener; delegates to Eastern District Sub-Associa-tion, Messrs T. P. Bogue and H. B. Paulin; selectors, Messrs A. Webb and L. H. Bowers. The following new members were elected: —Messrs F. J. Medley and G. R. Amos. The subscriptions w’ere fixed as follows: Old members 15/-, new members 15/-, with 2/6 entrance fee, junior members 2/6, with an entrance fee of 5/- for new juniors, honorary members 2/6. The matter of entering teams in the Eastern District competitions were held over to a meeting of the Executive Committee. It was resolved that with the permission of the Domain Board a concrete wicket be laid down. It was decided to thank the Tennis Club for the use of its lawnmower and pavilion during last season. TENNIS CLUB. There was an attendance of 25 members at the annual meeting of the Mataura Citizens’ Tennis Club held in the Bandroom on Friday. The president (Mr D. Russell) presided. The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet! already pub lished) referred to the excellent position of the club’s finances. He also made refer ence to the standard of play during last season and to the improved seating accommodation. He explained the delay in the top-dressing, but he trusted this matter would receive attention in the near future. Members had given the club strong support in the past and it was hoped that the ensuing season would see the same support. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mr D. Russell (re-elect-ed) ; vice-presidents, Dr. I. Woodhouse and Mr R. Hutton; secretary and treasurer, Mr A. Thorn; captain, Mr A. Thorn; vicecaptain, Mr A. Russell, H. B. Paulin, H. W. Oliver, Misses J. Curtin, E. Mitchell, E. Alderson, M. Donnell, N. Ingram. D. Chamberlain, A. Edgar, I. Bolton, T. Mackie, A. G. Adam and E. Martin; Grounds Committee, all male members of the club; delegates to the Eastern District Sub-Association, president and secretary; auditor, Mr D. Russell. The matter of top-dressing the courts and fixing an opening date was left in the hands of the secretary to arrange. The question of providing a new pavilion was discussed and from the remarks of various speakers it is quite evident that accommodation in this direction wall be provided in due course. It was decided to enter A and B grade teams in the Eastern District competitions. New members were elected as follows: Mesdames T. J. Cameron and C. Hargest, Miss I. Bolton, Messrs S. Slocombe, V. Fitzgerald, J. Knight and Captain F. J. Medley. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. A meeting of the Executive Committee of the Horticultural Society was held in the Society’s Hall on Friday, Miss Adam (president) occupying the chair. Mr F. W. Brown, late office-bearer in the society, now residing at Dunedin, acknowledged receipt of the annual report and balance-sheet and expressed regret at being unable to attend the meeting.—Received. Mr D. Russell, late auditor, acknowledgement of a letter of appreciation of his services.—Received. Mr R. McDonald, secretary of the Orchestral Society, requested the use of the hall for practices and facilities for three public performances in the year at a reduction on the usual charges. The requirements of the orchestra would be 44 practices and three concerts and offered £l2 per year, payable as the society would require.—The request was granted, the rent to be paid quarterly. The following judges were appointed for the Spring Show: —Pot Plants and Cut Flowers and Decorative, Mr A. T. Newman (Gore) ; Baking, Mr A. B. Martin. Staging committees were appointed as follows: Section 1, Messrs A. Baineaves and A. N. Mac Gibbon; section 11, Miss Adam; section HI, Mrs J. H. Stalker and Miss Dickie; section IV., Mesdames W. Stewart and D. Russell; section V, Mrs C. D. Smith and Miss N. Taylor. The matter of arranging for music and door-keepers was left in the secretary’s hands, and it was agreed that Mr W. P. Thorn be asked to erect tables for the show. The Revising Committee for the Autumn Show was appointed as follows:—Pot Plants and Cut flowers, Mesdames W. P. Thorn, W. Watt, W. Stewart. Miss Winning, Messrs J. Sutherland and A. Baineaves (convener ) ; Farm, Fruit and Dairy Produce, Messrs J. Taylor, J. L. Mitchell, J. Mitchell, W. H. Barrett, G. Barclay and J. Ingram; Jams, Jellies and Miscellaneous, Mesdames W. P. Thorn, C. D. Smith, Stalker, A. J. Grant, Messrs Dickie, T. Mackie and A. G. Adam (convener). It was decided to request the School Committee to observe a half-holiday on the occasion of the show and the secretary was instructed to endeavour to obtain the services of the Mat aura Town Band during the evening. ODFELLOWSHIP. At the fortnightly meeting of the Mataura Lodge, P.G. Bro. J. Wilson presided over a targe attendance of members. After the usual business had been transacted P.G. Bro. Wilson handed over the gavel to G.M. Bro. J. Knight, who initiated three candidates into the order. At the conclusion of the meeting a social hour was spent, the tingle members entertaining the benedicts, G.M. Bros. J. Knight presiding. During the evening songs were contributed by Bros G. Cameron and D. Gilchrist and Bro. F Birch contributed a recitation, a most enjoyable evening being spent. Arrangements were made for the visit of the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle Lodge on September 20. The Juvenile Lodge, presided over by N.G. Bro. R. McCaughan, transacted the usual routine business, after which the visiting Brothers of the adult Lodge were welcomed. P.G. Bro. R. W. Coltherd acknowledged the welcome and congratulated the boys on the excellent manner in which they carried out their duties. A KITCHEN EVENING. Prior to her marriage Miss Jessie Irwin was the guest of over 100 friends at her parents’ residence, Terrace Road, Mataura. The evening was spent chiefly in dancing, and at a suitable interval Miss Annie Wyber asked Miss Irwin’s acceptance of a large collection of varied and useful kitchen utensils. She also wished her much happiness and prosperity in her wedded life AU present then sang “For She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mr J. Stuart responded on behalf of Miss Irwin and thanked all for their many useful and beautiful gifts. He also extended a hearty invitation to all to visit them in their new home at Brydone. A dainty supper provided by the ladies of the district was then handed round. Music for the dancing was supplied by Mr Bert Duncan, while Mr A. M. Robertson played

extras. During the evening Mr A. Jones favoured the company with songs. Mr James Haugh made an efficient M.C. The function concluded with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” BAND OF HOPE. The monthly meeting of the Band of Hope was held in the Oddfellows Hall on Friday, there being a good attendance over which Mr T. Swale presided. The following contributed to the programme Pianoforte solo, Mr C. Lock hart; song, Miss May McKinnon; recitations, Miss Beatty McEwing and Mr Jarrett; dance, Master Mick Murphy; reading, Mrs C. Rose; mouth organ solo, Miss Dorothy Perry.
