QUEENSTOWN NOTES

THE WEATHER. (From Our Correspondent.) Copious rain fell in the district last week, accompanied by heavy snow on the higher levels. The snow is now disappearing fast under the sun’s rays. During the last few days beautiful weather has prevailed, but it is still cold in the early mornings. GOLF. The men played a medal match on Saturday with the following result: J. P. McBride 101—20—81; R. Gilkison 93—12 81; L. Curtis 105—24—81. The tie will be decided during the week. A match between the ladies and men will take place on Saturday next. Bisques will be awarded to each lady. The semi-final of the “knock-out” competition resulted as follows: —Mrs Wilkinson beat Mrs Mann 5 up and 3; Mrs Dunn beat Mrs Elliot 6 up and 4. The final will be played at the week-end. Miss Geisow won the out-club match. BASKETBALL. Girls’ basketball matches were played at Arrowtown and Queenstown on Wednesday and Friday of last week. On Wednesday, Queenstown Rovers played Arrow B team, the former winning by 5 goals to 4. The same afternoon at Queenstown, Convent A Old Girls defeated Arrow A team by 4 goals to 3. The Arrow A team also played Convent B team on the same afternoon, when the score was 6 all. On Friday, St. Joseph A girls met an Arrow A team on the latter’s ground and defeated them by 9 goals to 4. In a second match against Arrow B the honours lay with the visitors, the goals registered being 10—4. FOOTBALL. The junior grade competition for the Miller Cup was concluded on Saturday last, when Queenstown defeated Arrow by the narrow margin of one point, the scores being 16 —15. Thirteen matches were played in the competition, three of which were disallowed by the Sub-Union on account of irregularities. Of the remaining 10, Queenstown won six and Arrow four, making the cup points 12 to 8 in favour of Queenstown. The local club hold the cup fot the 1928 season. The Central Sub-Union sent a team to the Lakes last Saturday and a match was played with Wakatipu at Arrowtown on Saturday last. It was generally expected that the home team would get well beaten, but such was not the case, the score being 7 (one penalty and one potted goal) to 3 (one try) in favour of Central. The latter played the more heady game of the two, but the Wakatipu team did well to keep Central from crossing their line. The game was a very open one, both sides throwing the ball about in great fashion. The Central boys, all the best of sports, were generous to admit that the Wakatipu team would easily reverse Saturday’s result with training. Mr A. Watson captained the Central team and G. Metzger the Arrow. The visitors were entertained at a smoko in the Royal Oak Hotel afterwards and then at a dance in the Athenaeum Hall. They returned on Sunday. A seven-a-side tournament will be held on the Arrow ground on September 29 to wind-up the season. At a meeting of the Wakatipu Sub-Union last week notice of motion was given by Mr W. Warring that the following amendment to rule 3 be adopted: That no regrades or transfers be granted after June 30 and that no pupil of any school be allowed to play in any of the sub-union’s competitions. GENERAL. St. Joseph’s Old Girls held a very enjoyable dance in the Town Hall on Wednesday last. Excellent music was supplied by the Queenstown orchestra. This was the first occasion on which the Town Hall was used since the new’ floor was put down. The floor was voted excellent. Th# Junior Football Club also held a daace in the hall this evening. A Clay Gun Club has been formed in Queenstown with a membership of over 20. The designation of the club in the Wakatipu Gun Club. The opening shoot was held to-day and much enthusiasm was shown by those who participated in it. The local newspaper announced in its Tuesday’s issue that Mr James Horn, M.P. for Wakatipu, will not seek re-election at the next General Elections. Health reasons are given for the retirement of a member who has done good work for his constituency.
