SAILOR RESCUED

WASHED OVERBOARD PETTY OFFICER OF H.M.S. AUSTRALIA INCIDENT DURING STORM (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 10.5 p.m.) Ottawa, August 12. News from Montreal states that during the voyage of the cruiser Australia from Portsmouth to here a petty officer was washed overboard during a storm. The sea was too rough to launch a lifeboat. The cruiser circled the sailor and lowered a Jacob’s ladder, then steered alongside the swimming man who caught hold of the lower rung. Assisted by another officer and the line he was rescued.

The cruiser was welcomed here on Satur day by the Mayor, Mr Houde, and prominent citizens.—Australian Press Association—United Service.
