GORE BOROUGH

MEETING .OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) Last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr I D. McDougall), Councillors J. Brownlie, W. K. Hamilton, J. A. Baldey, C. R. B. Wilkinson, D. Lyttle, W. McKenna, H. Black, W. D. Shelton, T. Sim and A. T. Newman. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr Arthur Diack wrote stating that he had recently sold a section in the* Gore Borough for the sum of £lO. After the rates etc. were paid he had to find 18/2 to square up the deal. As rates had been paid by him for the last 16 years at the valuation of £l5, he considered that he was entitled to a refund of at least one third of the total rates paid.—Received. E. R. Tutty applied for a crossing into his property in Elizabeth street, West Gore. —Granted on usual conditions. A letter was received from the Celtic Cricket Club in reference to the borough reserve known as the Caledonian grounds which had recently been leased to the Southland Woollen Mills Ltd. The club had been using'this reserve as a cricket ground for the past two or three years, and last season laid down a concrete pitch at a cost of approximately £lO. The club was now faced with the problem of finding a new ground and with the expense of laying down a new pitch. As it was understood that an allowance was made for improvements in fixing the price to be paid by the woollen mills, the club desired to know whether the council would make an allowance to the club in respect of its pitch.— Referred to Finance Committee for report. J. H. Cameron wrote complaining of rubbish left on the footpath in Ontario street, East Gore, and also of a live fence overhanging the path.—Received. E. A. Wallace applied for a cressing into his section in Lawrence street. —Granted on usual conditions. The secretary of the Gore Boxing and Gymnastic Club wrote in reference to securing the use of the Town Hall for the purposes of the club. Some 200 men and youths had signified their intention of joining the club, which had not been formed with any view to monetary gain, but rather to help the youth of the town. He could not definitely state how many nights the hall would be required, but would be glad if the Council, in fixing the rent, would do so on a basis of four nights per week. It had been suggested that if the Town Hall were fitted up as a gymnasium the High School and other schools in the town should have the use of it during the day. Other bodies such as the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides could also use it if necessary.— It was decided to offer the club the lease of the hall at the rate of 10/- a night. FINANCE COMMITTEE. The Finance Committee recommended:— (1) That accounts amounting to £lO4l be passed for payment. (2) Regarding bridge lighting. It was decided to adopt Mr Lange’s suggestion for lighting the bridge at the cost of £46 15/-;. (3) Letter from Ritchie: Recommend that the sexton arrange for half-acre lor cultivation by Ritchie. (4) Hospital Boards: Recommend that the letter from the Town Clerk, Palmerston North, relating to direct representation on Hospital Baards by councils be received, and no action taken. (5) Loan of £1,100: Recommend that the Town Clerk make application to the Loans Board for renewal of £l,lOO loan falling due on March 27, 1929, for a period of 10 years.—Sinking fund sufficient to meet same at maturity.
