FOUR KILLED
TRAGIC TEST FLIGHT IMPERIAL AIRWAYS MACHINE TWO OCCUPANTS NARROWLY ESCAPE (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) London, July 13. Imperial Airways Vickers-Vulcan baggage aeroplane during a test flight at Croydon crashed in flames. Four were killed, including Hall Airways Inspection Director, and two girl typists. Two others, including the pilot, Captain Stafford, were injured. The crash was the most serious Imperial Airways disaster for several years. One of those killed was the aircraft inspector. The others killed were all employees of the aerodrome, including two of the most popular typists, who were being given a little joy ride. The machine was quickly seen to be in difficulties, and it nose-dived with a tilt and crashed in a hedgerow in a field near the aerodrome. The pilot and another person who were seriously injured climbed out. Then the machine immediately burst into flames. Hundreds of people ran to try and extricate the passengers, but they were tragically helpless, as they could not go within ten yards of the inferno. The machine was last used during the week-end to test the Lowenstein mystery, when a party of journalists was on board. — Australian Press Association.
