CONCERT AT OTAMA

A SUCCESSFUL NIGHT. On Wednesday of last week the Otama residents held a monster bazaar with conspicuous success, the object being to liquidate the existing debt on the hall. A fitting finish to this success came on Friday evening, when a concert party, composed of Miss M. Jopp’s pupils, assisted by Gore and other artists, gave a very excellent concert. The calls made on the time of Gore entertainers of late have been exceedingly heavy, but they are always ready and willing to oblige their country friends, sometimes at great inconvenience to themselves. A full house greeted the party which gave the entertainment, and one and all were amply repaid them for venturing forth on such a stormy night. In addition to wellknown local artists, several young and promising singers made their debut before a district audience. Mr Gordon McKay was chairman and the following programme was submitted: Pianoforte duet, Misses Gormack and Martin; song, Mr Noel Derrett; song, Miss Wynne; violin solo, Miss S. Latham; eong, Mr W. Chatterton; song, Miss Kelly; Spanish dance, Miss Daisy Mcßae; song, Miss A. Tayles; humorous sketches, Mr C. McLeod; song, Miss Watt; duet, Misses F. and E. Hinchey; song, Mr R. L. Stevenson; song, Miss M. Jopp; humorous recitation, Mr George Paterson ; song, Miss C. Atkinson; song, Miss F. Hinchey; military dance, Miss D. Mcßae; song, Miss E. Hinchey; song, Mr R. L. Stevenson. Miss D. Carmody, L.A.8., proved a most sympathetic accompaniste. During the evening art unions were drawn by Master Cross under the supervision of Constable Sughrue and the chairman, and the prize-winners were found as follows: Supper cloth (donated by Miss Jean Logan), Mr S. Newell; hand-worked duchesse set (donated by Miss Bellew), Mr L. Barclay (Gore) ; cushion (donated by Mrs H. Wright), Mr A. Beath (Chatton); oil painting, Mr James Logan (Otama); cushion (donated by Mrs John Mee), Martin Gerken; cushion (donated by Mrs R. Martin), Mr W. McKenzie (Gore). The chairman, in extending the thanks of the committee to the artists, said some people thought the arranging of such functions was a simple matter, but this was not so. Knowing the many calls made on the time of the artists, he could assure them that the committee deeply appreciated all that had been done to make the concert pleasurable. He also expressed the thanks of the committee to the car-owners who transported the party. Mr Mac Kay announced that the sum of £3OO was in sight as a result of the bazaar and concert. He expressed gratification at the splendid result, which was due entirely to the wonderful team work of all concerned. Mr R. L. Byars expressed the appreciation of Otama’s residents to Mr G. MacKay (chairman of the committee) and Mr D. Bruce (secretary). Supper was then served by the ladies of the district, after which the floor was cleared for dancing, the music being supplied by a district orchestra.
