PETROL TAX

METHOD OF EXPENDITURE. (Special to the Times.) Wellington, July 13. “As far as the ratepayers in Southland are, concerned, the petrol tax might as well be abolished for they are not getting any benefit from it,” said Mr. J. R. Hamilton (Awarua) in the House to-day. “It is wrong that the expenditure of the money should be practically in the hands of a public works engineer.” The Hon. A. D. McLeod: —You have your district highway council haven’t you? Mr. Hamilton: —Yes, but the engineer is the man in charge and he has the most say. I contend that the spending of the money should be left to the county councils whose members know the requirements of each district.
