The engineer reported as follows: Since last meeting the weather has been wintry, but seasonable, and surfacing work has been carried on as well as possible. The new bridge over the Aparima at Wrey’s Bush has been open to traffic some two weeks now and the approaches were completed on Monday last. The old bridge is now closed for removal. The new bridge at Whare Creek, except for one coat of paint, was completed last week, and this week the contractor for the approaches is making a start on same. In connection with the application from Mr McCorkindale and others, asking for a public level crossing at the north end of Wairio railway station yard, Councillor Cody inspected and as a result I have in the first place referred the matter to the district engineer of railways for his consideration. On June 25 Councillor McGregor presided over a meeting of Ohai township ratepayers. Mr Burns and I were also present and the matter of a special rating area for a proposed drainage scheme and street lighting, sanitary and dust removal services as per petition lodged here, was gone into. At a subsequent meeting held a week later a local committee was set up and further consideration is to be given before the matter of the special rating area and the works to be done is fixed up.—Adopted. The chairman reported on his visit to Wellington, stating that several councillors met the Southland League and members of Parliament beforehand and had their support in regard to an increased grant for the Thornbury bridge. When Mr Furkert was present they made a deputation to the Minister of Public Works and made their requests to receive a fair hearing. The application to have the Ohai-Orawaia and Gropers-Thornbury roads declared main highways was repeated and they trusted some good would come of their visit.
