LUMSDEN NOTES
TOWN BOARD. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Lumsden Town Board was held on Tuesday, when the chairman, Mr F. Keith, presided over the following commissioners: Messrs T. Small, O. Taylor, C. Maloney and G. Tomlin. J. J. Crawford wrote requesting the board’s approval of the subdivision of section 3, block 5, Lumsden Township,.—Approval granted. Alex. McAlister wrote drawing the board’s attention to the state of Forest street.—lt was decided to carry’ out certain improvements. A petition signed by a number of residents in Dacia street requesting repairs to the footpath was received.—lt was decided that the work be proceeded with immediately. Mrs A. Marshall wrote asking for improvements to Plantation street.—To be attended to. An application was received from the Football Tournament Committee to erect a fence on the recreation ground for the seven-a-side tournament on July 18. —Permission granted, subject to the usual conditions. The estimates for the ensuing year were discussed and it was resolved that the rate for the current year be fivepence in the £ on the unimproved value; hospital rate l-Bth of a penny on the capital, value the sanitary rate 15/- per annum. Correspondence was received from the Department of Health reporting favourably on the sanitary condition of the hotels in the Town Board area. GOLF. The weather was fine for the golf matches on Saturday. The winners of the flag matches were Mrs McDonald in the ladies’ competition and Mr Macdonnell in the men’s competition. The first round of the ladies’ competition for the Earl trophy has been completed and the following is the draw for the second round, the matches for which must be played by July 21: Miss McAlister v. Mrs Thomson, Mrs Heath v. Mrs McDonold, Mrs McAlister v. Mrs Biggar, Miss Mullan v. Miss Brotherston. A knock-out competition has been arranged for the men and the following is the draw for the first round: D. Wright v. R. Key; F. Thomson v. R. Scott; J. Ogilvy v. M. Reidy; N. Crosbie v. E. McDonald; Dr Brown v. A. Earl; R. Charleson v. S. Stevens; W. Wright v. A. Heath; W. Johnson v. Jenks. LODGE BALL. The members of the Loyal Lumsden Lodge held their annual ball in the Masonic Social Hall on Wednesday. There was a large attendance, about 60 couples taking part in the dance, first-class music for which was supplied by the Bluebird Dance Band. At the supper adjournment the toast of “The King and the Manchester Unity” was proposed by Bro. J. Marshal, N.G. The toast of the visiting officers and brethren was then proposed by Bro. G. Aitcheson, who extended a hearty welcome to the visitors from the various lodges. The toast was responded to by Bros. T. Campbell (Dipton), A. McEachen (Winton) and J. Gordon (Gore). A framed emblem was then presented to Brg. M. McKenzie, P.A., and medallions were presented to Bro. M. Reidy and F. Small. Bro. Campbell, in making the presentation, congratulated the brethren on their progress in the lodge, and hoped that they would continue to take an active interest in the Order. Suitable replies were made by the brethren. Supper was served, the catering arrangements being carried out by Mrs E. Reidy. After supper dancing was again indulged in and a very successful evening concluded in the small hours of the morning. The secretarial duties were carried out by Bro. J. Clouston, while Bro. A. G. Small made an efficient M.C. FOOTBALL. A meeting of the Football Tournament Committee was held on Wednesday to make further arrangements for the seven-a-side tournament on Wednesday. Stewards were appointed to the various positions and the matter of erecting goal-posts on the grounds was left in the hands of Mr J. Ogilvy. The following committee was appointed to make arrangements for the ball in the evening: Messrs D. Ogilvy, W. Wellman, V. Richards, G. Patterson, F. Crosbie, J. McAlister and R. Jones. Great interest is being taken in the following tourney both by players and residents. • Silver cups will be presented to the winners and the trophies, which are on view in the township, should attract large entries. On Saturday a junior match between the leading teams, viz., Lumsden and Waikaia, will take place on the recreation grounds and a keen tussle is expected. The following players will represent the home side: Menzies, Graham, F. Crosbie, F. Tomlin, L. Tomlin, Williamson, Belsham, Patterson, Allen, Pomeroy, Isaacs, Richards, Crawford, Sheriff and’ Rodgers. BRING AND BUY SALE. A successful bring and buy sale in aid of the school building improvement fund was held on Friday last. The function was ably conducted by an energetic committee, with Mrs James Menzies as president and Miss Lee as secretary. Messrs T. McCutcheon and A. Brash, chairman and secretary of the School Committee, also rendered valuable assistance. As a result of the sale the satisfactory sum of £5O was realized and this amount will be devoted to the fund for improving the interior of the school building.
