MATAURA NEWS

W.E.A. CLASS. (From Our Correspondent.) The weekly meeting of the Mat aura W.E.A. class held in the Coronation Hall on Wednesday attracted a good attendance of members. Mr S. G. August was voted to the chair. The subject for the evening was in the hands of the Rev. C. J. Tocker of St. Paul’s, Invercargill, who gave a recital of Francis Thompson’s poems. The attention of those present was held from start to finish and the recital proved to be one of the most interesting sessions of the class. All present were loud in their appreciation of Mr Tocker’s efforts, Mr R. McDonald remarking that the recital was one of outstanding merit. Rev. Tocker suitably replied. REBEKAH LODGE. The Pearl of Mataura Rebekah Lodge held its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday in the lodge room, Sister M. Mitchel, N.G., presiding over a good attendance of members. After the usual routine business of the lodge had been transacted the members of the Juvenile Lodge, 1.0.0. F., were admitted and entertained at an evening. Games and competitions were thoroughly enjoyed and marked with keenness throughout. The winners of competitions were: Bros. S. Sutherland, J. Quilter, R. Heaps, B. McCaughan (2), C. King and W. Gilchrist. The Sisters provided the members of the Juvenile with an appetizing supper, and altogether a thoroughly enjoyable evening resulted. DRUIDS’ LODGE. The fortnightly meeting of the Pride of Mataura, U.A.0.D., was held in the lodgeroom on Wednesday, A.D. Bro. W. S. Jolly presiding over a large attendance of members. The usual lodge business was transacted and final arrangements were completed for the annual dance which is to be held on Thursday, July 19. The lodge then closed down and the members of St. Lawrence H.A.C.B.S. were admitted and engaged in a euchre match with the Druids. At the call of time it was found that the Druids had upheld their reputation, the scores reading—Druids 41 games, H.A.C.B.S. 39 games. Supper was provided and fraternal greetings exchanged. Afterwards the hall was cleared for dancing, music for which being supplied by Bro. Albert Duncan (violin) and A. Jones (piano). During the evening vocal items were contributed by Bros. A. Jones and R. Swan.
