METHODIST CHURCH

QUARTERLY MEETING HELD. The quarterly meeting of the Central Methodist Circuit was held on Wednesday evening, in the Jed street Sunday School. The Rev. A. Mcßean presided, and there was a large attendance of officials. Membership returns showed 255 seniors, and 60 juniors. Reports of work amongst the young people showed that good work was being done, the Sunday school and Bible classes being all in a healthy condition, and well staffed. The balance-sheet submitted by the stewards showed that the income was sufficient to meet the expenditure, and also to pay over to the trust fund the sum of £5. On the motion of the circuit stewards (Messrs P. A. Pearce and F. W. Preddy) the Rev. A. Mcßean was unanimously invited to remain in the circuit for a sixth year, commencing from April next. This resolution was supported by letters from two of the Bible classes, urging that Mr and Mrs Mcßean be asked to stay for a further term. Mr Mcßean signified his acceptance of the invitation, and thanked the officials for their cp-operation and good will. Mr J. J. Moore was appointed a society steward and Mr E. Pearce was added to the representatives of the congregation on the quarterly meeting. Mr Irvine, from Australia, was welcomed to the meeting. A discussion took place upon the question of unemployment, and it was resolved to help in any publicly organized effort that the needs of the occasion call for, as well as to act independently in this urgent matter. It was decided to ask for retiring collections for the relief of distress on Sundays, July 22 and August 5. When the business was completed a committee of young ladies from the Bible classes sprang a surprise upon the meeting by very kindly serving seasonable refreshments. Both their thoughtfulness and the refreshments were greatly appreciated, and they were cordially thanked.
