BOWLS

THE GORE CLUB. ANNUAL REPORT. The report to be presented at the annual meeting of the Gore Bowling Club is as follows: It can be safely said that the Gore Club ne'-er enjoyed a better year. The finance, the membership and the playing results were the best yet. Contributing causes to this were the Daylight Saving, the attention to green drainage, the interest of officials and the high standard of play of the individual members. The club lost by death two of its most respected members in Messrs E. Tayles and H. Shepard. Both gentlemen were held in the very highest esteem by the members and their loss will be keenly felt. To the members who have been laid aside by sickness the committee trusts they are now fully recovered and hopes to see them on the green next season. The expenditure for the season has been very heavy. A new mower, a new roller and a drainage system were all big items of expense, but of course will not recur for many years. On the other hand the old roller was sold at a fair price, while different members contributed privately towards the new mower. To these the committee expresses its thanks. The playing surface of the green was better than for many years past. Your committee wishes to thank the greenkeeper (Mr J. B. Perks) for the excellent manner in which the green was kept last year. Visiting players both local and from the larger centres highly praised the green and the committee appreciates the reputation thus secured. Once more the season’s play was spoilt by unkept fixtures. It is a pity when the different clubs do not adhere to the fixtures laid down by the sub-centre. Your committee is of the opinion that strong representations should be made to the sub-centre in regard to this matter. During the year a Winter Club was formed amongst the members. A fee of 5/- was fixed for membership and a new system of heating was installed. Draughts, chess, etc., were purchased and the venture promises to be very successful. Certainly a great deal of pleasure has been given to many members. Mention should be made of Mr D. Bishop’s help in this matter. The club’s singles were won by Mr A. Tretheway, who is to be complimented on his success. Mr S. Preece was runner-up and only lost by the narrowest of margins. The vice-presidents’ doubles were won by Mr John Day and Mr S. Preece (s), the runners-up being Messrs W. Allott and S. Learmont (s). Fine play characterized this match and these members are to be congratulated on their success, as this competition was well entered for and keenly contested. The club doubles were won by Messrs J. Garrick and A. Tretheway (s), the runners-up being Mr D. McGill and Rev. N. Burgess (s). The Eastern District Cup competition was again won by the Gore Club. Neither the A’s nor the B’s finished all their fixtures. The B team was leading on points, but as the A team had played more matches it must be awarded the cup. Thanks to the energy of Mr J. Ussher a further tournament was held at Gore at Christmas. A large number of entries were received from district clubs and from Dunedin, Invercargill and other centres. Some splendid matches were seen and the final between Messrs Prece and Perks and Mr D. McGill and Rev. N. Burgess was considered to be one of the finest exhibitions of the game ever seen in Gore. Mr McGill and Rev. Burgess won for the second time. The club was represented in the champion of champion singles by Mr A. Tretheway and in the champion of champion doubles by Messrs J. Garrick and A. Tretheway. At the Southland tournament Messrs S. Preece and J. B. Perks (s), won the Southland Doubles championship. The committee desires to thank those players for winning further honours for the club. In the Invercargill pairs Messrs W. Cox and A. Tretheway came second after playing many fine games. Mr D. McGill and Rev. N. Burgess were beaten in the semi-final for the Southland championship. The Gore Club also won the Southland Champion Rinks, the club being represented by Messrs S. Preece, W. Cox, A. Tretheway and Rev. N. Burgess (s). This also was a fine performance. The Gore Club also won the Southland Shield Rink competition, being represented by Messrs J. Ussher, W. Cox, A. Tretheway and H. Graham (s). Gore was looked upon as the likely winner from the start and sustained popular opinion. Mr H. Graham came back to his old form in this match and his play was good to watch. The club won the Eastern District Rinks competition, being represented by Messrs J. Ussher, D. McGill, Rev. N. Burgess and J. B. Perks (s). This is the second year in succession that this honour has fallen to the Gore Club. Gore also secured the Eastern District Singles Championship through Mr S. Preece. The club was also represented in the Southland and Otago match at Invercargill by Messrs Ussher, Cox, Tretheway and Graham. Your club is honoured by having four members selected for this important fixture. Messrs D. McGill and J. B. Perks, represented your club in the Eastern District Doubles competition. The Gore Club also won the Baker Shield competition, being represented by Messrs F. Murray, K. Richards, S. Preece and H. Graham.' This was a big competition and the winning rink is to be congratulated on its splendid performance. Your committee feels it will be seen at once that Gore had a wonderfully successful season—the best in its long history—and would like to thank those players who by their play have brought such distinction to the club. Your committee also desires to thank the ladies who have given ungrudgingly of their services on all social occasions. To the members one and all the committee tenders its sincere thanks for their loyal support and trusts that better seasons yet await the Gore Club.
