CATHOLIC MEN’S CLUB
WEEKLY MEETING AT GORE. Despite inclement weather and counterattractions, quite a large number assembled in Young’s Room on Tuesday evening for the weekly meeting of the above club. Mr J. J. Casey presided and welcomed several new members. The programme for the evening was an impromptu question box. All the questions asked allowed plenty of scope for debate, and a very pleasant and interesting evening resulted. The manner in which the speakers rose to the occasion manifested an immense improvement in handling difficult questions and showed beyond doubt that the club could afford to boast of the talent which went towards making it the strong organization it is. Some of the questions debated were: Mr A. H. Smith, “Is the knowledge gained by polar expeditions worth the risk of life involved?” Mr O. Davis, “Will New Zealand tobacco ever capture the New Zealand market?” Mr Spong, “Is the Government justified in letting Chinamen into the country?” Rev. Father Fenelon, “How would you spent £lO,OOO to the best advantage ” Mr J. Cooney, “Are the directors of the Southland Woollen Mills justified in proceeding further?” A. very keen discussion followed each question, and in summing up the chairman stated he was pleased and surprised at the excellent showing made by the speakers, and congratulated and thanked them for their efforts. It was decided that a mock banquet be held at the next meeting of the club.
