CUSTOMS RETURNS
MARKED DECREASE. A large decrease is shown in the Customs returns compared with the month of June, 1927. They are as follows: — June, 1928 £9,191 17 4 June, 1927 £23,049 19 3 For the six months ending June 30 they are:— 1928 £32,236 10 10 1927 £49,357 11 2 Beer duties are:— June, 1928 £340 4 11 June, 1927 £5Ol 17 5 For the six months ending June 30 they are as follows: 1928 £1,222 9 1 1927 £1,340 9 1 ’ The decrease in the Customs is accounted for by the fact that in 1927 the Government increased the tax on alcoholic liquors and the local merchants made a big clearance from bond to avoid the tax which was just coming into force. There has also been a marked decrease in the amount of indent goods coming forward for local merchants, the explanation being advanced that, local retailers are either buying more local goods or obtaining their requirements through northern indentors.
