OLD-AGE PENSIONS

ADOPTION IN CANADA. EXTENSION OF PRINCIPLE. Vancouver, May 18. With the Yukon Territory now coming within the provisions of the Old-age Pensions Act, and Saskatchewan and Manitoba enacting measures that will bring these provinces within its scope, the scheme is gradually developing. Acceptance of the two Prairie provinces, following British Columbia and Alberta, opens the way for the application of the Act to the North-west Territories, which depends, according to the enabling Federal legislation, on its adoption by two provinces adjoining the territories. The geographical requirements now being fulfilled, the Northwest Commissioner is applying to Ottawa to have the Act applied there. This will bring the whole of Western Canada under the Act. Neither Ontario, Quebec nor the Maritimes have yet expressed a desire for old-age pensions. Half the cost of the pensions is borne by the Federal authority and half by the individual provinces.
