ASSAULT CHARGES

POLICE RESISTED ESCAPE MADE FROM. CONSTABLE INCIDENT IN PONGAROA (Per United Press Association.) Pahiatua, June 29. A case of unusual interest to Pongaroa was heard yesterday before Mr L. Free, S.M., when Michael Francis Dillon was charged with being intoxicated while in charge of a car and with .assaulting and resisting the police. In connection with the same incident, Henry Dillon was charged with assaulting and obstructing the police, William A. Reid with encouraging a person to obstruct the police, and Frederick Wright with obstructing the police On the night of June 9 Constable John Mclntosh stopped a car in Pongaroa township which was said to have been driven by Michael Dillon and endeavoured to arrest him on a charge of being drunk while driving a car. Defendant resisted and Henry Dillon as well as Wright then came on the scene, Miehael Dillon eventually getting away. Witnesses for the defence said M. Dillon was sober. The other defendants declared that they interfered only because the constable had Dillon by the throat in a drain and was choking him. Decision was reserved.
