DARLINGTON DISASTER DEATH ROLL NOW TW ENTYTHREE EXPRESS DRIVER'S STATEMENT (United Frets Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) London, June 28. The Darlington death-roll totals 23, one of the injured dying. The acc.dent is the most disastrous since Gretna Green in 1915. The little village of Hettonlehole was tragically afflicted, 14 women therefrom being killed when they were returning from a Mothers’ Union outing. Scarborough also had many badly injured. There were poignant scenes to-day when the bodies were laid out in rows and identified in the improvized mortuary in the goo<ls yard. The express driver says the distance signal was set in his favour and he wenr through. Suddenly he saw an engine and applied the brakes but it was impossible to avoid it. When the engines crashed he was hurled off the footboard and when he recovered consciousn«*ss he heard heartrending screams.—Australian Press Association.
