LUMSDEN NOTES

HOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE. (From Our Correspondent.) A fire occurred at Lumsden on Thursday morning when a four-roomed house occupied by Mrs Alice Brookes was totally destroyed. The outbreak commenced in the outbuildings the previous morning but good work by residents who formed a bucket brigade was successbful in subduing the flames and saving the house. However a fresh outbreak occurred between 5 and 6 a.m. the following morning resulting in the total destruction of the building. The cause of the final blaze is thought due to smouldering embers which had not been properly extinguished. The house and buildings which belonged to Mr G. F. Johnson were insured for £125 in the New Zealand Office and the furniture was insured for £l5O in the Northern Assurance Co. Practically nothing was saved. GOLF. Changeable weather nas Deen experienced during the week. On Tuesday a strong norwest wind prevailed drying up the ground in splendid order. A sharp frost was experienced on Wednesday followed by cold squally showers which now prevail. The surrounding hills have received a coating of snow.

The end of the month will mark the close of the duck shooting season and several local sports have ventured into the back’ country in quest of game. No large bags have been yet reported and the season as far as this district is concerned has been a poor one, there being fewer ducks in this locality this year than for a number of years.

A dramatic society has been formed in the township and it is expected that residents will shortly be given an opportunity of witnessing a performance by local talent.

Good progress is being made with the erection of the new police station. Constable Drake, who has been in charge of the local office for some months has returned to Invercargill and Constable Fraser is now acting as relieving officer.
