THE LATE SPEAKER
REFUSAL OF PEERAGE. FIRST FOR 100 YEARS. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, June 26. The announcement that the late Speaker of the House of Commons for personal reasons does not desire promotion to the peerage caused little surprise among his intimate colleagues in the House of Commons. where it was known that he desired to retire altogether from legislative and political duties on relinquishing his post in the Lower House. He is, however, the first Speaker for 100 years who has not been so honoured. In more recent years a viscountcy has been conferred in such cases.
It is generally assumed that Mr Whitley will receive some other honour from the
King, whose desire to comply with the House of Commons’ request, that some signal mark of Royal favour should be conferred, was communicated to the House of Commons by the Prime Minister yesterday. The King’s answer will be considered by the House of Commons to-morrow.— British Official Wireless.
