Twenty-four years ago on Saturday a fierce naval engagement took place at Port Arthur when the Japanese succeeded in repulsing a Russian sortie with heavy losses to the latter. The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Tainui sailed yesterday evening for Lyttelton and Wellington to complete loading for Home ports. The Tainui arrived at Bluff on Wednesday last and loaded meat, cheese, butter, tallow, hemp and wool for Southampton. She will sail finally for that port from Wellington about July 6. The Union Company’s cargo steamer Waikouaiti sailed from Bluff last evening for Dunedin, Lyttelton and Timaru. She arrived at the port on Sunday evening leaving Hobart on Wednesday last and discharged a large quantity of timber and some general. She had an uneventful trip across the Tasman, fine weather being experienced until just out of Bluff, when a strong wind was encountered. The auxiliary schooner Waterlily returned to Bluff yesterday from the West Coast Sounds with a full load of fish.

The Oreti sailed from the Invercargill wharf at 7 o’clock yesterday morning for Port Craig, from which port she is due back here to-morrow. It is expected that on Thursday she will sail for Port Craig once more.

The Karetu sailed from Timaru at 3 pjn yesterday for Bluff. She is due at the port this afternoon and will sail to-mor-row for Sydney direct. The Poolta is expected to sail for Westport this evening.

The Waikawa arrived at Lyttelton at 11 a.m. on Saturday and is expected to sail to-morrow for Dunedin and Bluff, due here on Saturday and sailing later for New Plymouth. Messrs J. G. Ward and Company advise that the Somerset will replace the Tongariro which is scheduled to sail from Liverpool on August 18 for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin and Bluff, due here on September 28. The Tongariro which left Port Chalmers on May 24, arrived at Panama on June 12 and sailed again the following day for London and West Coast of the United Kingdom ports. The Cumberland leaves Dunedin this evening for Bluff, being due at the port to-morrow. It is expected that she will clear this port on Thursday evening after loading for London, Antwerp and West Coast of the United Kingdom ports. The Kartigi is expected to sail from Adelaide to-morrow for Melbourne from which port she will sail on July 4 for Bluff. She is due at this port on July 7 and upon completion of discharge will proceed to Dunedin, Lyttelton, Wellington and Wanganui. The Calm is expected to arrive at Bluff on Saturday to lead general cargo when she will sail the same day upon completion of discharge, for the usual ports. The Canadian Challenger is also expected on Saturday to complete loading, sailing later for Wellington and Auckland. Carrying general cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Port Chalmers. Bluff and New Plymouth, the Northumberland is due here about July 6. The Rotorua is scheduled to load at Bluff on August 1 for London. The Port Napier which is expected to sail from London on July 18 for New Zealand ports, will make Bluff a direct port of discharge, being expected to arrive here about the middle of September. No alteration is advised in the itinerary of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s motor vessel Taranaki which is due at Bluff on July 2 to discharge general cargo after which she will proceed to Hawkes Bay and New Plymouth. The Norwegian motor ship Borgestad has been chartered to load jarrah at Bunbury for New Zealand. The Borgestad, a vessel of 3924 tons, was built in 1924. The steamer Dundrennan has replaced the Saltersgate, and was despatched from Tolca, Chile, on June 8, with a full cargo of nitrates for discharge at Auckland and Australian ports. She is due ,at Auckland about Monday. The Dundrennan

is owned by the Scottish Navigation Company, Glasgow. She was built at Glasgow in 1912. Her tonnage is 4248 gross. The vessel visited Auckland twice in 1923. On the second occasion she brought sugar from Java.

The steamer Parracomye has been chartered to load jarrah at Bunbury in July for New Zealand.

The 66-ton schooner Shannon is being equipped at Sydney as a salvage vessel. Her first employment will be the rescue of the cargo and fittings of the interstate steamer Iron Chief, which was beached near Crowdy Head (Queensland) on April 1, after striking on the Mermaid Reef. Her cargo includes rails which alone are valued at £5OOO.

The Norwegian motor ship Brynje is en route from Newcastle to Bunbury to load a full cargo of Australian hardwood for Auckland. After discharge she is to go to San Pedro and San Francisco. Her arrival at Auckland is expected about the middle of July. The Brynje is a three-mast-ed twin-screw vessel of 3916 tons. She was built at Copenhagen in 1926.

THE ULIMAROA. Messrs J. G. Ward and Company, the local agents for the Huddart Parker line, received advice yesterday morning that the Ulimaroa will sail from Auckland on July 13 and from Wellington on July 27 for Sydney.
