BOROUGH COUNCIL
COMMITTEES’ REPORTS. The ordinary Jortnightly meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening. There were present his Worship the Mayor (Mr John Miller) and Councillors W. Hin chey, J. Robertson, G. R. Cooper, J. D. Campbell, J. H. Tattersfield, C. J. Brodrick, C. B. Tapley, A. C. Ford, G. J. Reed S. M. Macalister, E. Sheehan and T. O’Byrne. The borough solicitors advised that they had served notice on the Southland Power Board to the following effect:—“ln ing you with notice under the agreement between your board and the Borough of Invercargill for electricity we draw your attention to the price of installation etc. being ascertained by the valuation arbitrators. If, however, there is any probability of a price being agreed upon without arbitrators their appointment will not be necessary.”—Received. The following committee reports were adopted:— RESERVES COMMITTEE. Having accepted the tender of R. D. Senior (purchase price £5), for the removal of 33 pinus insignus trees on the south-west corner of Queen’s Park, in accordance with the specifications, and on the condition that the work is commenced immediately and completed before July 31, 1928, and that the successful tenderer takes out an employer’s liability insurance and public risk policy. With reference to the letter from W. Curran having informed him that the Council is now in communication with the superintendent of the Borstal, with rereference to the matter of having the outfall drain on the western side of the reclamation area cleaned out. Having received a letter from the Southland County Council, and noted that the work of gravelling Mason’s Road, will be put in hand as soon as the weather is suitable. BATHS COMMITTEE. With reference to clause 6 of the Baths Committee, 24/4/28, which was referred back to the committee for further consideration, recommend the adoption of the clause in its present form as follows: “Having received a letter from the Southland Education Board and noted that the board will pay the tuition fees for the instruction of Standard 4 children in swimming in each district, where facilities are available. The total expenditure in this direction to be limited to £40.” GAS, TRAMS ETC. Resolved that the borough electrical engineer be authorized to proceed with the extension of electric street lighting in the Georgetown, Enwood and Appleby subdivisions. FINANCE COMMITTEE. Having referred the matter of the ratability of the North Invercargill Presbyterian Church to the borough solicitor for his opinion. Recommend in connection with the engineer’s report, 23/5/28, that the engineer supply additional costs including formation and overhead, to show completed cost per square yard, and to supply particulars upon what basis he framed his costs of £24,276 for completion of the works under the £74,000 streets loan. Having considered the estimates of the various departments and referred the estimates of the Public Works Department and waterworks to the Public Works Committee for review in regard to certain points. PUBLIC WORKS. Having authorized the Town Engineer to call tenders for 520 tons of bitumen, in accordance with specification submitted. Recommend that Mr R. J. Cumming be informed that this Council will not be prepared to top-dress the private road running between Tay street and Esk street each year if necessary, he to bear half cost; with regard to the request for a crossing at the Esk street end, the Council is quite prepared to put one in provided Mr Cumming is prepared to pay for same. With reference to the application of R. Fraser for permission to erect a sign, recommend that same be granted on the usual conditions. Resolved that the appointment of J. Holland to the vacancy at the men’s convenience, be confirmed. Recommend that the borough electrical engineer be instructed to place lights on the new plot in Tay street, similar to those already erected.
