ORETI BRIDGE
QUESTIONS IN COUNCIL. PLANS TO BE READY THIS WEEK. “When will tenders be called for the erection of the Oreti bridge?” Councillor Brodrick asked the Mayor at last night’s meeting of the Council. “Being an architect you will know how long it takes to prepare plans,” replied the Mayor, “We laymen have been told in committee that it takes a very long time. I noticed in a letter to the paper that someone asked when the plans would be returned from Wellington. As a matter of fact the plans have not yet left the engineer’s office.” A sectional plan was placed on the table some weeks ago. The engineer was instructed to prepare proper plans and specifications so that they could be sent off as soon as possible. Since then the engineer had stated that he had been very busy and that the plans were not quite completed when he had been asked for the plans. Mr. Swinburne had informed the speaker, however, that he expected to have the plans completed this week. He had to,show the plans to the two engineers interested and they would then be sent to Wellington. W'hen they went to Wellington it was the Mayor’s job to see that they did not lie there unduly. “Councillor Brodrick and Councillor Ford will be able to inform us whether the plans have been unduly delayed,” concluded his Worship. “Is a toll going to be considered?” asked Councillor Macalister. ‘‘l am interested in the annual cost of the bridge as it affects the rates.”
The Mayor in reply said that any loan that was raised affected the rates. It was a piece of nonsense for people to go on a platform and say that a loan would not raise the rates. In regard to a toll on the bridge the committee had been so concerned with getting the plans out and the bridge started that they had not had time to think of a toll. Tolls did not seem to be popular in New Zealand. Before the matter was allowed to drop Councillor Brodrick said that he did not think the engineer had unduly delayed the plans. There was a great deal of work involved.
