MUSICAL RECITAL

A POPULAR ENTERTAINMENT. VARIED PROGRAMME PRESENTED That there is a very large number of music lovers in Invercargill was demonstrated last evening when the Victoria Hall was packed to the doors on the occasion of a musical recital arranged by Messrs Charles Begg and Co. Ltd. Long before the appointed time the hall was filling rapidly and by eight o’clock scarcely a vacant seat remained in the building. A splendid and varied entertainment had been arranged for the delectation of the audience, musical ano vocal items being freely interspersed. The object of the recital was to demonstrate to the public the new foot expression piano called the “Gourlay.” This piano is a true musical instrument, capable of giving expression to the interpretation of the player and it certainly caused much interest last evening amongst the audience. The mechanical note is absent from this instrument which possesses a very natural tone which was noticed to a marked extent in all the musical numbers played last evening. Messrs Charles Begg and Co,. Ltd. are to be congratulated in acquiring the services of Miss W. McPeak, and Messrs L. Dailey and H. Le Gal who assisted to make the evening so successful. Miss McPeak with her charming manner, captivated the audience and her fine contralto voice was heard to advantage in the following numbers: “My Ships,” “I.ack-a-day,” “Soft Awakes My Heart,” ‘To a Miniature,” “I Did Not Know,” “In an Old-Fashioned Town.” Mr L. Dailey has a very clear tenor voice and acquitted himself well in the following numbers: “For You Alone,” “Mother o’ Mine,” “Serenade,” “Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes,” “Morning,” “I Hear a Trush at Eve.” In giving a splendid performance Mr H. Le Gal proved a favourite with the audience in the following violin numbers: “By the Waters of the Minnetonka,” “The Canary,” “Italian Polonaise.” “Shepherd's Dance.’*
