FIRES
BLAZE AT CHEVIOT. SHOPS AND THEATRE DESTROYED. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, May 29. A disastrous fire at Cheviot early this morning destroyed four shops and the picture theatre. No fire-fighting plant was available and residents had simply to stand by and watch the fire burn. The shops destroyed belonged to the Farmers’ Co-op., Glasson (fancy goods), Cone Bros, (butchery), and T. West (bootshop). The theatre was owned by J. Pruden. THE INSURANCES. Christchurch, May 29. The insurances available were on Struthers’ building and contents £ll5O in the 1.0. A., West’s bootshop £750 in the Atlas, £220 in the State Fire on the stock; Glasson’s billiard room and shop £355, stock and fittings 1.0. A.; £9O on projecting machine picture theatre. HOUSE AND CONTENTS DESTROYED. Masterton, May 29. Fire early yesterday morning destroyed a five roomed house and contents at Home Bush near Masterton. The building was occupied by William Cross and his eleven-year-old son who made a hasty exit, only saving a few personal effects. The house was insured for £4OO and the furniture for £BO and is owned by the estate of Mrs Cross.
