COOKS’ STRIKE
TERMINATION URGED WATERSIDERS FEELING THE PINCH REQUEST TO UNION SECRETARY (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) Melbourne, May 29. The watersiders’ representatives conferred with Mr Tudehope, secretary of the Marine Cooks’ Union, immediately after the conference with the shipowners. Mr Tudehope is waiting in Melbourne for developments. Another meeting is being held with the owners to-day. The watersiders are pressing Mr Tudehope to order the his men back to work because the watersiders are feeling the pinch of unemployment. Mr Tudehope being unable to induce the other • maritime unions to make a common cause is looking for an honourable means of escape from stark defeat.—Australian Press Association. MOVE TOWARDS CAPITULATION. TWO STEAMERS MANNED. Sydney, May 29. The Cooks’ Union has provided a cook for the Kooyong on the owners’ terms and Mr Tudehope has telegraphed to Brisbane directing the branch there to provide a cook for the steamer Time at all costs, pending a settlement of the dispute. Both the vessels have sailed and this is regarded as the first step towards the Union’s capitulation.—Australian Press Association. GLOOMY PROSPECTS. ANOTHER CREW PAID OFF. (Rec. 10.45 p.m.) Melbourne, May 29. After a special meeting of shipowners it was announced that several of the Waterside Workers’ Federation’s questions had been considered, but so far as the owners were concerned there were no developments. It is stated that the watersiders have now withdrawn from the negotiations with the owners, leaving the matter in Mr. Tudehope’s hands. The owners are, however, determined not to negotiate with Mr. Tudehope until the cooks resume work. The crew of the steamer Canberra were paid off, indicating that there is little likelihood of a settlement.—Australian Press Association.
