BOARD OF MUSIC
PRESENTATION OF CERTIFICATES. PLEASING FUNCTION AT GORE. (From Our Correspondent.) A pleasing function took place in the Gaiety Hall, Gore, last evening, when the certificates gained by the local candidates at the last examination of the Associated Board of Music, were presented. The Mayor (Mr D. McDougall) presided over a fairly large attendance. The board’s local representative (Mr W. B. Johnstone) stated that the function was somewhat in the nature of an innovation so far as Gore was concerned, but the board was anxious that it should become a permanent one. In the course of a brief address the Mayor congratulated the successful candidates upon the success they had achieved, and also congratulated Mr M. McCutcheon upon having won of the three scholarships awarded by the board to candidates in New Zealand. He expressed the hope that Mr McCutcheon would be able to take advantage of the scholarship and continue his studies at Home. Mr J. Hunter M.A., Rector of the Gore High School, congratulated the board’s representative upon having organized such a function and gave an interesting outline of the establishment of the board and its work in the interests of music. Brief addresses were also given by Mr E. C. Smith, president of the Gore Competitions Society, and Mr A. S. Fleming, representing the Gore Orchestral Society. Mr Fleming also presented the certificates to the successful candidates. During the evening a delightful musical programme was given, to which the following contributed items:—Piano solos, Misses F. M. Nichols, A. Staples and Master John Matthews; violin solos, Messrs I. W. Todd, M. McCutcheon and G. Perks,
