PACIFIC FLIGHT
SMITH’S ADVENTURE START TO BE MADE TO-MORROW MACHINE IN GOOD ORDER (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) New York, May 28. A San Francisco message states that Captain Kingsford Smith has announced definitely that the starting time for his flight will be nine on the morning of May 31, and declared that nothing but impossible flying conditions would delay the start. He stated that the Southern Cross was in excellent condition, requiring nothing but careful final tests which are now being given. Mechanics were busy to-day tuning up the motors. The start will be made down the same runway from which Maitland, Hegenberger and others flew to Honolulu.—Australian Press Association. EFFICIENT WIRELESS PLANT. SATISFACTORY TESTS MADE. Gisborne, May 29. Wireless advice has been received by Mr Ivan O’Meara from the San Francisco Examiner station 6ARD, that Captain Kingsford Smith’s ’plane, Southern Cross, is equipped with a most effecient wireless plant for the Pacific flight next month. During a test flight, from Los Angeles to San Francisco, the ’plane maintained two-way communication with 6ARD, the tests being exceptionally satisfactory. The Southern Cross operates on a 40 metres wave band. The code call is “Khab.”
