PIGEON FLYING
SOUTHLAND HOMING CLUB. . The Southland Homing Pigeon Club flew a flock race from Sawyer’s Bay on Sunday, May 20, a distance of 113 miles, 24 birds, representing six lofts, competing. The birds had to fly against a very strong wind, accompanied by rain and hail. The birds were liberated at 7.45 a.m. and the first bird arrived home at 3.15 p.m., taking 74hrs to cover the distance, which, under normal conditions, should have been flown under five hours. The storm proved too heavy for most of the birds as only three arrived home on the day of the race, the remainder arriving home on Monday. Following are the results:— Mr Kearney’s “Limerick 1 Mr Morris’ "Red Abbey” 2 The club intend to fly the next race from Waipahi, and all birds must be handed in at the club room not later than 7 p.m. on Friday, June 1.
