AMERICAN AVAR DEBTS

CANCELLATION OF LOANS. OPINION OF MR C. M. SCHWAB. London, May 2. “An almost unmentionable fortune was offered to me if I would not place the American Steel Corporation’s plant at Britain’s disposal during the war. I replied that there was not enough money in the whole of Europe to break my will,” said Mr Charles M. Schwab, the president of the corporation, who it visiting Britain, to receive the Bessemer gold medal, in returning thanks for the medal at a meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute. He said he had done £1,000,000 worth of business with Britain without a contract, and there had never been one word of difficulty or unpleasantness. “I am one of the Americans who contributed money during the war while we were unable to contribute men. I have no sympathy with the collecting of war debts from the men who stood for the preservation of civilization and manhood,” he added.
