BASKETBALL

SATURDAY’S MATCHES. SENIOR GRADE. COLLEGIATE (6) v. RATA (3). Collegiate.—Shoots, M. Humphries, E. Botherway, R. McGill; centres, L. Strathearn, D. Deegan, E. Shepherd; defences, K. Maloney, E. Hughes, V. Cloughley. Rata.—Shoots, I. McDonald, B. Wall, L. McLauchlan; centres, M. Basstian, R. Todd, C. Smith; defences, G. Basstian, E. McCurdy, M. Shand. This game, although quite good, was in many ways disappointing. The passing of both teams was at times very good. Collegiate had the advantage of the game, and although the ball found its way often to the Rata goal-post, the shoots were unable to score. The play of the Rata defence third was excellent. Rata improved its game considerably in the second half. Doreen Deegan still continues to shine in the Collegiate centre third, while Mabel Humphries, of this team, is shooting as consistently as ever. Edna Hughes and Violet Cloughley play good sound games in the defence third. Ihe half-time score was Collegiate (4); Rata (1). Mr Kinross controlled the game. Mabel Humphries scored four goals for Collegiate, Ruby McGill one and Ella Botherway one. Iris McDonald scored two goals for Rata and Beattie Wall one. MAKAREWA (21) v. ST. MARY’S (4). St. Mary’s.—Shoots, M. Shepherd, M. Maloney, M. Cook; centres, M. Fitzgerald, M. Shirley, M. Cooper; defences, S. Maher, A. Fox, D. Stone. Makarewa.—Shoots, L. Ward, K. McLean, M. Wright; centres, R. Spencer, D. Dennis, R.. Waldron; defences, M. Clark, E. Mortimer, C. Glennie. Makarewa had in every way the better of the game and was much the superior team. St. Mary’s team has been much im proved by the addition of M. Cooper, who plays a sound game. M. Wright shot some excellent goals for Makarewa. Play was more eager in the second half, and both teams worked harder. At times both jumping centres were over-eager. M. Wright shot most of the 18 goals for Makarewa, although she was well supported by L. Ward and K. McLean. The half-time score was Makarewa St. Mary’s (1). Mr Hamilton controlled the game. BLUFF (19) v. PIRATES (8). Bluff.—Shoots, L. Gilson, P. Calder, E. Albertson; centres, C. Fowler, B. Bailey, 1. Johnson; defences, I. Vickery, C. Wiig, I. Wiig. Pirates.—Shoots, A. Jones, L. Purdue, M. Milne; centres, E. McKenzie, C. Garth, G. Marshall; defences, R. McKenzie, L. McGregor, A. Roberts. This was the most interesting game of the day, although the Pirates team did not put up the fight that was expected of it. M. Webb and K. Hazlett were evidently badly missed from the team. Play was at first at Pirates’ goal, but after some unsuccessful attempts to score the shoots lost the ball. Aimless passing followed, after which L. Gilson secured the ball and scored. This was followed by three more goals in quick succession. Pirates again attempted to score, but were unsuccessful. After Bluff had secured three more goals, A. Jones scored for Pirates. A few minutes after Audrey Jones again scored for Pirates. The Bluff shoots again secured the ball and scored several more goals for their team. When ever the Pirates team succeeded in getting the ball to its goal Audrey Jones scored. Play in the second half was much better, and the changing of places with L. Purdue from the shooting third and E. McKenzie from the centre third considerably improved the play of the Pirates team. L. Gilson, as usual, shot some excellent goals foi her team, and played an outstanding game. The combination in the shooting third of the Bluff team is very good. Audrey Jones, who shot all the goals for Pirates, played a good game. Pirates’ defence third baffled the opposing side on many occasions. L. Gilson scored nine goals for Bluff, P. Calder six and E. Albertson four. Audrey Jones scored seven goals for Pirates. Mrs Mclnnes controlled the game. INTERMEDIATE MATCHES. COLLEGIATE (6) v. ST. PETER’S (6). Collegiate.—Shoots, R. Johnston, P. Youngson, I. Perry; centres, W. Stevenson, K. Penny, L. Gilchrist; defences, R. Wilkes, R. Kennedy, P. Sloan. St. Peter’s. —Shoots, G. Hall, E. Mitchell, M. Patton; centres, D. Perks, J. Perks, M. Jordan; defences, E. Thompson, E. Mitchell, V. Bailey. As the score indicates, this was a very even game. At times there was ,too much scrambling and bunching on the ball. Collegiate’s passing was good, but sometimes a little too high. Trying sunlight on one goal-post made scoring difficult. The halftime score was Collegiate (3) ; St. Peter’s (31. I. Youngson scored four goals for Collegiate and I. Perry two. E. Mitchell scored four goals for St. Peter’s, M. Patton one and G. Hall one. Miss Rose Hinchey controlled the game. MAKAREWA (13) v. ROSEDALE (5). Makarewa.—Shoots, I. Glennie, W. Bell, A. Gorton; centres, J. Fotheringham, R Clark, D. Clyma; defences, L. Waldron, K. McHugh, A. O’Connor. Rosedale.—Shoots, M. Hunt, R. Brown, J. Allan; centres, I. Wilkes, M. Wilkes, I. Colquhoun; defences, W. Colquhoun, E Williams, B. Savory. Makarewa had much the better of this game. Rosedale has changed its team round once more. After half-time J. Fotheringham (Makarewa) sprained her ankle and was forced to leave the field. The half-time score was Makarewa (6); Rosedale (0). SEVEN A SIDE TOURNAMENT.
