BREACHES OF THE LAW

CASES AT WELLINGTON. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, May 25. For attempting to defraud customers by “topping off” sacks of pumpkins with large ones a Chinaman, Young Wah Chong, of Ohau, was to-day fined £lO. It was stated that although a prosecution was recently made a few bold market gardeners are still taking the risk of the “topping off” practice. Thomas Hannafin, licensee of the Brunswick Hotel was fined £2O for bottling whisky in bottles from which the original labels had not been removed. Giovani Zino was fined £1 for exposing for sale flounders under nine inches long. It was stated that in future the regulations governing the sale of fish were to be rigorously enforced. Abraham Novak, a compositor, aged 29, appeared before Mr. Page at the Magistrate’s Court to-day charged with the theft of £5 and three typewriters of a total value of £42 18/-. The Chief Detective stated that Novak was employed by the Dominion newspaper and committed the offences when he ceased work at 2in the morning. The £5 was stolen from a workmate and the typewriters at different dates. Accused had been fined £1 in 1917 for theft. Counsel for accused in asking for probation said Novak stole the typewriters as he had been pressed by some of his creditors to raise money. He was remanded for sentence till Monday.
