FLAG TORN DOWN
AUSTRIAN SENSATION ACT OF ANTI-ITALIAN STUDENTS MUSSOLINI’S THREAT FEARED (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) Vienna, May 25. A sensation was caused at Insbruck by two students tearing down the Italian flag which the Italian Consulate hoisted to celebrate Italy’s entry into the war. The town is seething with excitement and wondering if Mussolini will carry out his threat that “Next time we will answer Austrian attacks with deeds, not words.” The Consul immediately demanded that the flag be rehoisted with military honours. The Mayor agreed, but the populace was only incited to fresh anti-Italian demonstrations and renewed disturbances. Late at night the police charged the crowd with batons, 20 being injured and many arrested. The Consul at eight o’clock in the evening ordered the flag to be finally lowered. —Australian Press Association.
