RIFLE SHOOTING

NOTES BY “MARKER.” On the evening of Wednesday the 23rd, instant, the Invercargill Defence Rifle Club held an executive committee meeting to arrange for the resumption of shooting consequent on the Defence Department being in the meantime finished with the range at Otatara. At the meeting there were present: President Dr. Crawford, deputy president A. R. Wills, and Rifleman A. Lyall, W. S. Ayson, W. Milley, F. Frederic, R. Ure, W. Henderson, E. J. McLauchlan and the secretary, Mr J. Morrison. The following matters were decided: — That the combined supper and smoke concert to be supplied by the Wednesday men consequent on their defeat by the Saturday men some time ago be held on the evening of Monday, June 4, That a further three ranges of the club championship competitions be fired on June 4 commencing at 9 a.m. in conjunction with which a sealed handicap sweepstake competition be also held at each range fired and that a miniature cup be presented to the marksman obtaining the highest handicap aggregate on the day’s shoot. That it be left in the hands of the secretary and Rifleman McLauchlan to interview the Invercargill Gun Club with a view to arranging a date for a match with them. That the secretary communicate with the Mataura Club and arrange a match on the Otatara range on a convenient Wednesday. That the Smith cup competition include all handicap shoots from now till the annual meeting including therefore the sealed handicap competition of June 4 no shoots to be dropped. That the programme committee which comprises Deputy-President A. R. Wills, Rifleman A. Lyall and the, secretary draw up a programme which will be submitted for ratification to a general meeting of the club to be held in conjunction with the celebration of the 4th proximo. That in drawing up the programme the committee bear in mind that two shooting days for both the mid-week and weekend shots be kept clear in each month. That the report of the president with reference to the Miniature Club be received with thanks and that a meeting be called as soon as it is possible to commence operations, and that an effort be made to encourage outsiders to join up. That Rifleman W. S. Ayson be asked to fix the conditions of his trophy competition as soon as the programme for the ensuing months is to hand. Rifleman Robert Ure brought forward a suggestion that more class firing be indulged in, in future, and the committee individually showed their approval of the suggestion.

The Riverton men are now ready to fit up their target frames and appear to be in doubt whether to use the swing or shutter make. A well constructed shutter target is always the easier of the two to handle in a wind and I would suggest that the club apply to the Defence Department for a diagram and specifications of such a frame. The Nightcaps Club use wooden frames designed by the Defence Department and constructed by one of their members. If the Riverton Club has no expert carpenters in its ranks they would be well advised to get in touch with the maker of the Nightcaps target frames or with two experts in Invercargill whom I could, if desired, put them in touch with. MINIATURE NOTES, The fitting of efficient lighting appears to be all that is required to put the proposed range of the Invercargill Defence Miniature Rifle Club in order and now that the Winter Show is over it is expected that matters will soon be under way. In the north miniature rifle shooting, which involves but little of the strain and requires a little of the skill and science of range shooting, is very popular and several ladies’ clubs do good work. It is proposed I understand to admit, or shall I say solicit, the membership of ladies in the new club. The Christchurch Association Miniature Rifle Club has fired its second shoot in the winter tournament and the following are the position of the teams: —

In the junior grade nine teams compete and are in the following position:—

When the local .Miniature Club is formed it could by ballot or otherwise form itself into some half dozen teams and commence competitions similar to those up north where there are many clubs.
