EARLY SETTLERS
GORE ASSOCIATION. QUARTERLY MEETING HELD. The quarterly meeting of the Gore and Surrounding Districts Early Settlers’ ciation was held in Milne’s Tea Rooms on Thursday evening. There was an attendance of between 40 and 50, and the president (Mr D. McDougall) occupied the chair. The chairman gave a cordial welcome to those present, and expressed his opinion that the number of early settlers present on such a cold night was an indication that the association was fulfilling a good purpose. He announced that their next meeting, to be held some time in August, would be the annual meeting, and the committee proposed that it should be a free meeting tw all the members. It behoved all present, therefore, to see that their subscriptions were paid by that date. (Laughter.) Mr George Biggar, of Croydon, then read an interesting paper on the settlement of Croydon and the Waimea Plains. The paper was most informative. It referred to the settlement of the district from 1881, giving the names of most of the pioneers. He also gave a brief review of the early settlement of Gore.
Brief addresses of a complimentary nature on the paper were delivered by the chairman and Mr D. L. Poppelwell. During the evening the Misses Hinchey sang a duet, and solos were also sung by these young ladies and Messrs R. L. Stevenson and Paterson, and recitations were delivered by Messrs Paterson and McLeod, Miss F. Hinchey presided at the piano. A dainty supper was subsequently provided and an enjoyable evening terminated shortly after 10 o’clock.
