AERO CLUB
LEAGUE TO TAKE ACTION. PREPARING INVERCARGILL AS FUTURE AIR BASE. The prospects of Invercargill forming an aero club were further advanced at last night’s meeting of the Southland League, when Mr J. S. Dick secretary of the league*, placed some fresh aspects of the proposal before the meeting. “While in Christchurch,” said Mr Dick, “I gathered a good deal of information about the steps that have been taken in that town by the Canterbury Progress League. This body called a public meeting to test the feeling of the citizens and were fortunate enough to get a fine response from the moneyed section of the community, several substantial sums being pro mlsed to enable an aero club to take form. My suggestion is that the Southland League should take the initiative down 'here and follow the same procedure. If we have an aero club here, with the Imperial Highways scheme coming on, there is a strong porn) bility that Invercargill may be chosen as the base for New Zealand, a possibility that would benefit Invercargill immeasurably. I suggest that we write to the Canterbury League for all particulars and then call a public meeting in Invercargill, as if we get Ihe local support there is no doubt that the Government will be willing to do its share.” The idea met witff the unanimous approval of the meeting, and the secretary was instructed to get full particulars from Canterbury.
