FEDERAL CAPITAL

COST ALREADY £7,250,000. Canberra, May 24. Expenditure already incurred in building the Federal capital at Canberra totals £7,250,000, including capitalized interest.— Australian Press Association. For the huge sum spent on Canberra the people have complete water, sewerage, and electric systems, five large hotels and three boarding houses, two smaller boarding houses, roads which are good within the city area but poor outside, Parliament House, two secretariat buildings, and a large number of cottages, which are intended for the use of public servants. In addition, many smaller residential buildings of a temporary nature have been built, and gardens have been prepared. An important engineering work recently completed is the extension of the sewerage system. This will enable the Commission to open up new areas for residential purposes.
