British military music had its origin in the Grenadier Guards. The first band was raised by them in 1685. The Grenadiers’ drum-major wears the most costly uniform in the army. It consists of a ruby velvet coat lavishly decorated with gold lace, a velvet cap, and while gaiters buttoning to the knees.
