SOUTHLAND LEAGUE

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Southland League was held last evening, Mr W. Hinchey presiding over the following members: Messrs F. W. Preddy, H. F. Drewe, J. Stevenson, A. H. Stock, C. S. Longuet, F. G. O’Beirne, A. E. Willett, R. O. Newth, W. Alexander and H. B. Farnall. CORRESPONDENCE. The general manager of the Department of Tourist and Health Resorts wrote a* follows:—“I have to acknowledge receipt of your letter in connection with advertising in Australia, and have to advise that the assistance rendered by your league, has been appreciated. For your information I have to advise that arrangements are now being made for an extensive advertising campaign in Australia during the present year. You are no doubt aware that this Department has appointed outside salesmen at Melbourne and Sydney.”—Received. The secretary of the Queenstown Progress League wrote acknowledging the receipt of the copies of letters from the PostmasterGeneral and the Minister of Public Works and added: “I am instructed by my committee to thank you for your efforts in these matters. The success of your representations in the matter of the daily winter mail between Queenstown and Dunedin is a matter of great convenience to Queenstown residents.” The Town Clerk wrote concerning the Waimea line excursion and thanked the league for its endeavours in getting the Railway Department to run this excursion which, he said, had proved a decided success and had gratified all concerned. Messrs Thomas Cook and Sons, Wellington, wrote in reply to a letter from the League regarding the charges made to tourists on the Lake Wakatipu trip and stated that the rates charged by them were those quoted by the Railway Department. The Bluff Harbour Board wrote advising that its contribution to the league funds for the current year would be £2OO. The Town Clerk wrote stating that in view of the fact that a certain area of the South Invercargill Borough had been amalgamated to. the main borough the Council had decided to increase its contribution from £lOO to £llO.
