QUEENSTOWN NOTES

THE WEATHER. (From Our Correspondent.) With the exception of two or three njghts last week, we have had no frost yet and the winter is well advanced. It really has been wonderfully mild—sufficient to bring on spring growth. In one or two gardens I notice annual seedlings coming up in large clusters. GOLF. The Otago Club’s coach, Mr. Forrest, completed a busy week on Saturday last, almost thirty members of the local club took lessons, so that the standard of play ought to be improved considerably in the future. From his observation of the performances of local golfers, Mr. Forrest is of the opinion that their play compares very favourably with that of other country clubs which he has visited. During his visit Mr. Forrest gave some professional advice with regard to bunkering the links. The annual match with Wanaka will take place on Saturday next. The players are looking forward to the outing as they usually receive much hospitality from the Wanaka Club. FOOTBALL. The season was commenced on Saturday week when the first of the cup fixtures took place between Glenorchy and Queenstown at Glenorchy and between Arrowtown and Country Pirates at Frankton. Queenstown and Arrow Juniors also met at Arrowtown. Queenstown defeated Glenorchy 20—3, Arrow defeated Country Pirates, 26—3 and Queenstown juniors beat Arrow 14—3. As indicated by the scores the Queenstown and Arrow teams had easy wins. Glenorchy Club consists of a number of young untried players and they could not expect at the outset to defeat Queenstown. However, they are keen and willing to learn and something will be heard of them before the season ends. The Pirates went on the ground with a very weak combination (only 11 men playing) and they had no chance against Arrow'. The Country Pirates Club which is very depleted in numbers this season has, since its match with Arrowtown, disbanded and the competition for the cup has now resolved itself into a triangular one. Much regret is expressed in several quarters that the Country Club has meantime gone out of existence as, though unsuccessful, they have lent a lot of interest to football in Lake County. Owing to the Country Pirates having disbanded, the cup fixture with Queenstown last Saturday was cancelled. The match between the Queenstown and Arrowtown juniors eventuated on Saturday on the local ground. Queenstown were again victorious, this time by 6 points (2 tries) to nil. Allan Inglis, a very promising player ecored both tries for Queenstown. Arrowtown and Glenorchy meet at Arrowtown on Saturday next. RIFLE SHOOTING. The competition for President H. Mackenzie’s trophy (Queenstown section) was completed last week. The conditions were two best scores at 300 and 600 yards and 500 and 600 yards out of eight competiitions. Rifleman H. Lorder was top scorer with 223 points. Six others in order were: President H. Mackenzie, 220; D. R. Gray, 220; A. Eunson, 210; J. Munro, 208; H. Buckham, 191; A. McCormick 167. The fifth and final competition for the Ken Melville Cup took place on Saturday last. The results will be made known later. The final shoot for the season will take place on Saturday next, 26th inst. The competition will consist of a 7-shot cup match at 300, 500, and 600 yards. Several prizes have been donated. GENERAL. There is a movement on foot to re-form the local branch of the R.S.A. It is suggested that re-unions of returned men be held twice a year in order to keep alive the spirit of comradeship between the men; also that they might arrange to buy their own poppies and with the proceeds of sale (subsidized by local bodies) devote same to employment for returned men in necessitous circumstances. A meeting will be held on Thursday week to further the object. In the meantime the feeling of returned men will be sought on the matter. Mr. W. H. Berry has been elected as councillor for Lake Ward in the borough council to fill the vacancy caused through the resignation of G. Melville. St. Joseph’s Church will hold the first of their fortnightly winter socials on Thursday. The annual meeting of the Lakes District Acclimatization Society and Lake County Council will be held to-morrow.
