SEQUEL TO TRAGEDY

MOTOR DRIVER BEFORE COURT. (Per United Press Association.) New Plymouth, May 15. A tragedy on the main road near Mokoia on February 14 had its sequel in the Supreme Court to-day when George Cravy Smith, a stock buyer of Hawera, was charged with manslaughter, with driving a car negligently so as to cause the death of Millicent Elizabeth Richter, wife of a Mokoia farmer and with driving a car while intoxicated so that death was caused. A plea of not guilty was entered to all counts. Evidence was given that accused drove past Mokoia at 35 miles an hour. One man in his car was hanging over the side as though drunk or asleep. Shortly afterwards, motorists found Mrs Richter lying seriously injured on the roadside with accused’s car standing farther on. The woman was taken to hospital and died next evening. The police said that when they interviewed accused he showed signs of being under the influence of liquor and a passenger in accused’s car admitted that they had had drinks. Medical evidence was that accused had had more drink than was good for him.

The Crown case had concluded when the court adjourned to-night.
