CITY MARKET
THE CHRISTCHURCH SCHEME. OFFER TO PURCHASE REJECTED. (Per United Press Association.) Christchurch, May 14. The City Council to-night rejected an offer of £9,475 for the city market site and buildings thereon. Labour councillors argued that the price was not adequate and that the market was making profit so that the council need not sell the land at a sacrifice. Non-Labour councillors favoured the acceptance of the offer. One of them suggested that the buyer, who was the owner of the Clarendon Hotel, adjoining, was anxious to buy the market to get rid of its smell.
