GORE COMPETITIONS
DEMONSTRATION CONCERT. The first of the Gore Competition Society’s demonstration concerts held in the Princess Theatre last evening attracted a very large audience which was treated to an excellent avening’s entertainment. In addition to items by the successful competitors, the judges also contributed to the evening’s programme and Miss Anita Winkel’s halfhour entertainment party delighted the audience with their clever and amusing songs, choruses and sketches. This party has consented to remain for the second demonstration concert to be held this evening. Mr E. C. Smith, president of the society, presided and took the opportunity of thanking on behalf of the society all those who had assisted to make the festival a success. The support the society had received, he stated, would encourage it to continue with the holding of the festival next year. He desired to thank the donors of special prizes and those who had contributed to the prize fund. The assistance the society had received in this way was greater than ever before. He specially wished to thank Mr A. S. Fleming who had donated a special champienship prize as a memorial to the late Mr Herbert Fleming. He desired also to thank the judges who had at all times been pleased to assist and advise the competitors. Thanks were also due to members of the executive who had worked harmoniously together throughout the festival. A great deal of the credit for the success of the festival was due to the secretary (Mr W. D. Shelton) who had the control and direction of the competitions from day to day. To his kindness and geniality to a very large extent could be attributed the friendly spirit that had prevailed amongst the competitors. Mr A. Stevenson who had acted as stage manager also deserved the thanks of the society for his excellent work. He wished also to make especial mention of the official accompaniste, Miss M. Johnston, whose work had been of a very high standard indeed. Mr A. Foubister’s services as official piper for the dancing had also been highly satisfactory. In concluding the chairman stated that he desired to thank the public of Gore for the interest it had taken in the festival and to express the hope that the final demonstration concert would be as liberally supported as the first concert had been. The final demonstration concert will be held to-night. THE CHAMPIONSHIPS.
