THE JETTY
REPORT ON DEEPENING BERTHAGE SPACE. To last night’s meeting of the Council the Town Engineer reported as follows concerning the dredging out of the berths at the wharf: —I would point out to you that the deepening of the berthage space alone is useless unless the channel be also deepened and a turning basin be provided at the wharf. It is not possible to utilize the Bluff dredge for work at the wharf and the Prisons Department cannot spare their dredge for some two years. As far as I am able to determine no dredge suitable for the work is available for hire. The only alternative is for the Council to purchase a secondhand dredge, such as those used for gold-dredging. There are some of these I understand available on the West Coast. One of them could be assembled at Invercargill for approximately £3OOO. An alternative method is the deepening of the basin by drag-line excavators. By this method I estimate that the work can be done for the sum of £3600, including the cost of the plant. There are other alternatives and patented methods of dredging the basin, but I cannot recommend them because I have no knowledge of their efficacy. _____
